Primula meadia is a spring-flowering perennial that makes a low rosette of smooth lance-shaped green leaves, often tinged red near the crown. Leafless green or red scapes carry loose terminal umbels of nodding flowers. Each bloom has five strongly reflexed pink, lilac or white petals, coloured throat rings and a pointed yellow staminal cone that creates its distinctive shooting-star outline.
Grow it in humus-rich soil that remains evenly moist during active spring growth yet drains freely, especially in winter. Partial shade is reliable, while cool full sun also suits plants where moisture remains consistent. Work leaf mould or mature compost into the planting area.
After flowering, the foliage yellows and disappears into normal summer dormancy, so place the rosette among later-emerging companions that can cover the gap. Its pollen-rich flowers support bumblebees and other native bees in woodland gardens, shaded rock gardens and naturalistic borders. Let the leaves finish their growth cycle, protect new shoots from slugs and snails, and avoid disturbing the fleshy roots while plants are active.
