Iris Firebreather is a tall bearded iris introduced by Schreiner in 1992. Sturdy stems reach about 37 inches and carry luminous self-colored orange flowers with tangerine beards late in the iris season. Blue-green sword-like leaves form upright perennial fans, giving the cultivar useful structure before and after bloom.
Grow Firebreather in full sun in rich, sharply drained soil, setting rhizomes at soil level or slightly exposed. Space clumps 18-24 inches apart and divide after flowering when crowded. Avoid deep planting, heavy mulch, and waterlogged ground. Remove spent stalks and damaged foliage, and monitor for iris borer and rhizome rot.
