Fine bright green fronds rise on wiry black stems, giving Adiantum capillus-veneris a light, arching outline in shaded gardens. The fern stays low and slowly spreads by short rhizomes, making it useful for edging, ground cover, and containers.

Grow it in partial to full shade in moist, humus-rich, neutral to alkaline soil that drains freely. Keep the root zone evenly moist because fronds decline quickly if the soil dries out. Direct sun can scorch the delicate foliage.

Trim faded fronds in winter, or wait until new growth begins in spring. The plant may also be grown as a houseplant in bright, filtered light.
