Captain Freedom is a white-flowered selection of large-leaved phlox, an upright herbaceous perennial with a quietly substantial presence. Its broad green foliage makes a clean foundation for airy white flower clusters, and the selection is marketed for blooming earlier than many familiar garden phlox. At about 28 inches tall, it fits comfortably through the middle of a mixed border without overwhelming neighboring plants.

Plant it in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that stays moist while draining well. It accepts chalk, clay, loam, or sand and a wide pH range when the root zone is kept in good condition. The rhizomatous plant gradually broadens into a clump, so leave room for a natural drift or divide established growth when needed. Deadheading helps carry the display, and the stems can be cut back at the end of the growing season.

The white flowers bring a cool, luminous note to cottage borders, prairie-style combinations, wildflower-inspired plantings, and cutting gardens. Its broad leaves and spreading habit give the planting substance before and after the main flower display. The selection's noted mildew resistance is especially useful where classic tall phlox can look tired later in summer, though routine observation for leaf spot and stem and bulb eelworm remains sensible.
