Koenigia alpina is a tall, clump-forming herbaceous perennial, long grown under names including Polygonum alpinum and Polygonum polymorphum. Strong upright stems carry abundant fine green lance-shaped leaves, building substantial foliage mounds that are useful toward the back of a large border.
Through summer, wide branching panicles open into airy plumes of many tiny, delicately fragrant creamy-white flowers. As the season advances, fertile clusters develop pinkish-red tones before maturing to brown achenes, while older foliage can turn warm brown-orange. The long-lasting display attracts numerous visiting insects.
Grow in spacious fertile soil that remains moist but drains freely, in full sun or partial shade.
