Ligularia dentata Desdemona is a robust deciduous perennial forming a broad mound of huge long-petioled leaves. New foliage emerges purplish red to bronze, then matures to bronze-green or dark green above while remaining deep purple beneath. Rounded to kidney-shaped, cordate-based leaves may reach 25–30 cm across and have strongly toothed margins. Thick red-purple branched stems carry flat-topped clusters of golden-orange to orange daisy-like flower heads in late summer and early autumn. Plants mature at about 75–100 cm high and 75–90 cm wide. Grow in deep fertile soil that remains reliably moist, ideally in partial shade or protected from hot midday sun and drying winds. It thrives in damp borders, bog gardens and beside ponds or streams but should not be permanently submerged. Afternoon drooping in heat is a physiological water-balance response and may recover by evening.
