Liatris spicata Goblin is a compact deciduous perennial forming upright clumps about 45 to 75 cm high and 20 to 30 cm wide. Narrow linear grass-like leaves arise densely near the base and become shorter as they continue alternately up firm unbranched stems. Dense bottlebrush-like terminal spikes contain many small deep purple tufted flower heads. The upper heads open first and flowering progresses downward through summer. Brown achenes follow and provide food for birds.
Grow Goblin in full sun in fertile chalk, loam, or sand that is moderately moist yet drains freely. It suits sunny borders, prairie plantings, wildlife and pollinator gardens, rain gardens, coastal gardens, and cutting gardens. Water through establishment and prolonged dry periods, but avoid saturated winter soil because corms may rot. Divide corm clusters in spring or sow seed in autumn. Deadhead for neatness or retain selected stems for birds and nesting insects. Slugs, snails, mice, rust, and leaf spot are possible problems. This hardy outdoor perennial is not a houseplant.
