Hosta Forbidden Fruit is a vigorous, clump-forming perennial with thick, strong foliage. Each large leaf has a glowing golden-yellow to orange center surrounded by a broad blue-green to dark-green margin. As the season progresses, the center can age toward a pale parchment tone. Pale lavender to nearly white bell-shaped flowers are carried in upright racemes from late spring into summer. Mature plants grow about 20 to 25 inches tall and 30 to 35 inches wide, creating a bold mound for shaded borders, woodland gardens, ground cover, and containers.
Grow it in partial or full shade in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, and protect it from hot afternoon sun. Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry summer weather. Divide established clumps in spring or fall. No routine pruning is required. Its thick foliage has shown improved general resistance, but plants should still be monitored for slugs and snails. The plant is toxic to pets and horses, so keep them away from it.
