Hosta First Frost is a clump-forming perennial valued for foliage that remains attractive into fall. Upright, heart-shaped leaves are intensely blue-green with a soft glaucous bloom. Their broad gold margins in spring gradually mature to cream and creamy white. Pale lavender tubular flowers rise on blue-green stems in midsummer. Mature plants grow about 15 inches tall and 25 to 35 inches wide, forming a dense mound for shaded borders, edging, and underplanting.
Grow it in partial or full shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil, and shelter it from cold, drying winds. Divide established clumps in early spring or late summer. Remove spent flower stems and clear dead foliage at the end of the growing season. The plant is toxic to pets and horses, so keep them away from it.
