Hosta Blue Ivory is a compact, clump-forming perennial grown chiefly for its broad variegated foliage. Its heart-shaped leaves open with blue-green centers and wide pale yellow to cream margins; through summer the centers deepen and the margins brighten toward white. Lavender flowers rise in loose clusters above the mound in July and August. Mature plants grow about 10 to 15 inches tall and 25 to 30 inches wide, making a strong foliage accent for shaded borders, ground cover, and containers.
Grow it in partial or full shade in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Shelter the leaves from cold, drying winds, mulch with organic matter in spring, and water during dry spells so the soil does not dry out. Divide established clumps in early spring or late summer. Remove finished flower stems and discolored foliage as needed. The plant is toxic to pets and horses, so keep them away from it.
