Geranium phaeum Raven is a clump-forming deciduous perennial that grows about 20 to 30 inches tall and 20 to 40 inches wide. Lobed green leaves form a tidy mound. Slender stems carry many nodding, wide-open cup-shaped flowers 2.5 centimeters across. The silky flowers are very dark purple to almost black, with a small white center.
The main display appears from May through July. Grow the plant in full sun, partial shade, or full shade in moist but well-drained chalk, clay, loam, or sand. It accepts acidic, neutral, or alkaline conditions and performs especially well in damp shade. Established plants also tolerate occasional drought, particularly in shade. Use it in cottage borders, wildlife gardens, woodland edges, under shrubs and roses, or as informal ground cover. The flowers attract bees, while deer and rabbits usually avoid the foliage.
Space plants about 18 inches apart. Keep the soil moist but well drained during establishment and water during prolonged dry weather. Cut back flowered stems and old leaves to encourage fresh foliage and possible rebloom. Divide in spring, or take basal softwood cuttings in spring and root them with bottom heat. Monitor for capsid bugs, geranium sawflies, vine weevils, slugs, snails, rust, downy mildew, leafy gall, viruses, and powdery mildew.
