Crimson and creamy-yellow spring flowers rise above red-tinted young leaves as Epimedium rubrum spreads through a shaded bed. Its rhizomatous, clump-forming growth creates a low ground cover beneath trees and shrubs, along paths, or at the front of a woodland border.
Plant it in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in partial shade. Established plants tolerate drier soil and need little maintenance. Cut old foliage back in late winter or early spring so the fresh leaves and flowers remain visible.
