Epimedium x youngianum Niveum is a compact rhizomatous perennial that forms a slow-spreading mound about 15 to 25 cm high and 30 to 45 cm wide. Pure white flowers, usually short-spurred to nearly spurless, rise in open sprays during mid to late spring. New compound leaves emerge green with red to brown flushing, mature to clear green in summer, and often deepen toward red and brown in autumn. The foliage is deciduous in colder gardens and may remain partly evergreen in milder sheltered sites.
Grow Niveum in partial or full shade in loose, humus-rich soil that is moist but well drained. Established clumps tolerate dry shade, although steady moisture during establishment improves growth. Add leaf mould or mature compost around the plant without covering the crown. Cut old foliage down in late winter before flowers emerge. Divide established clumps after flowering or in autumn. Vine weevils, aphids, slugs, and snails are occasional visitors, while persistent mottling may indicate mosaic virus.
