Lamprocapnos spectabilis, often sold as Bleeding Heart, is loved for its graceful, arching stems covered in dangling, heart-shaped blooms in spring. The flowers are usually pink with white inner petals, and they show clearly against the soft, finely cut green foliage. In a typical home garden, it forms a tidy clump that looks natural and relaxed. This plant is a strong choice for shady borders and woodland-style beds.

Growth is best in the cool part of the year, so the plant often looks at its peak in spring. As the season warms, the leaves may turn yellow and the plant can go dormant, sometimes disappearing by mid to late summer. Combining it with later-emerging perennials helps keep the bed looking full after it fades. The flowers are not known for fragrance, but they can still support pollinators while in bloom.

Care is straightforward when the soil is kept evenly moist during spring growth. Light shade, especially from hot afternoon sun, helps the foliage stay attractive longer. Once flowering is over and the plant begins to collapse, old stems can be cut back to the base for a clean finish. New plants are usually made by dividing a mature clump during dormancy, and root cuttings can also work. Watch for aphids and slugs, and avoid heavy, wet soil to lower the risk of rot. Because it can be harmful if eaten, it is best placed where children and pets are unlikely to nibble it.
