Darmera peltata forms a broad clump from thick rhizomes. Rounded flower clusters rise before the foliage in April, followed by glossy peltate leaves that dominate damp borders and may turn red in autumn. It thrives in medium-to-wet clay or loam in part to full shade; full sun is suitable only where moisture remains constant. Native to stream banks and woodland from southwestern Oregon to northern California, it is especially effective in rain gardens, bog gardens and streamside plantings.
