Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora Emily McKenzie is a compact cormous perennial with upright fans of mid-green sword-shaped leaves. Wiry self-supporting stems arch above the foliage, giving the mature clumps graceful movement without the height or aggressive spread of some larger crocosmias.
In late summer and early autumn, node-like buds open sequentially along the stems into large slightly nodding tubular flowers. Their vivid rusty orange tepals surround a conspicuous dark mahogany-red ring and a smaller warm yellow centre. The flowers attract visiting pollinators and provide long-lasting cut stems.
Grow in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains evenly moist but drains freely, in full sun or light partial shade. Plant the corms after frost danger has passed, mulch the root zone, water during dry spells, and avoid hot dry sites. Leave leaves until they yellow naturally, divide congested clusters, and protect corms where winter freezing would damage them.
