Brunnera macrophylla Jack Frost is a deciduous herbaceous perennial prized for large heart-shaped leaves frosted silver-white except for narrow green veins and a crisp green rim. Airy paniculate cymes carry tiny sky-blue, five-lobed flowers above the foliage in mid-spring.
Slowly spreading clumps reach about 10-50 cm tall and 50-100 cm wide, creating durable texture for woodland borders, shaded paths, underplanting, and ground cover. The accepted cultivar arose as a sport of Langtrees but is not interchangeable with that spotted-leaved parent or with white- and cream-margined Brunnera cultivars.
Grow it in cool partial or full shade in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Water during dry spells, avoid both drought and waterlogged crowns, mulch lightly, and remove tired foliage when new growth begins in spring.
