Sanguisorba Blackthorn is a tall clump-forming herbaceous perennial with elegant pinnate foliage and slender branching stems that create a transparent vertical layer above the border. Oval to oblong green leaflets have clearly toothed margins, while the upright flower stems may show subtle red tinges. Established plants usually reach about 120 to 180 cm high and 45 to 75 cm wide.

From midsummer into autumn, narrow bottlebrush flower heads open from darker buds into rose-pink blooms and gradually deepen or fade through red and brown tones. Different stems flower at different times, producing a long, airy display that moves naturally in wind and provides useful material for cutting. The flowers also support visiting pollinators.

Grow it in full sun or partial shade in moderately fertile, reliably moist but well-drained chalk, clay, loam, or sandy soil across acid, neutral, or alkaline conditions. Water regularly during establishment and extended dry periods because the root zone should not dry deeply. Divide congested clumps in spring or autumn. Leave old flower heads briefly for late-season structure, then clear the stems before new growth begins.
