Deep yellow daisies with dark central cones keep Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii Goldsturm in flower from midsummer into fall. Compact upright clumps fit naturally into perennial borders, cottage gardens, prairie-style plantings, and broad drifts. The flowers supply nectar and pollen for bees and butterflies, while mature seedheads offer food for songbirds.

This perennial matures at about 18 to 24 inches tall and 12 to 24 inches wide. Give it full sun for the strongest flowering, though partial shade is tolerated. Moist, well-drained clay, chalk, or loam supports steady growth, and established clumps handle occasional dry periods.

Deadhead spent flowers to extend bloom, or leave some seedheads standing for winter structure and birds. Divide crowded clumps in spring or autumn. Good air circulation and watering at soil level help reduce the leaf spots that can affect the foliage.
