Phlomis russeliana spreads into a weed-suppressing ground cover, sending stout upright stems above large, rough gray-green leaves. Whorls of hooded pale yellow flowers appear at intervals from late spring into early autumn.

Plant it in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. It tolerates drought after establishment but benefits from regular watering during its first year. Leave the faded stems through winter, then cut them back in early spring.

The flowering stems can be used fresh or dried, while the remaining seed heads carry the outline into winter.
