Lilium Matrix is a compact, deciduous Asiatic hybrid lily that grows from an ornamental bulb. It produces short, upright green stems about 35–50 cm high and forms a narrow group roughly 20–30 cm wide. Dark-green, linear-lanceolate to strap-like leaves have entire margins, parallel veins and an alternate to spiral arrangement along each stem.
In June and July, terminal racemes open large bowl-shaped flowers about 13 cm across. Each flower has six tepals and faces outward to upward. The cultivar is distinguished by fiery brick-red to red-orange tepals with a deep orange throat or central brushmark. Exact cultivar sources conflict about fragrance, so no scent should be assumed.
Grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-enriched, moist but well-drained chalk, loam or sandy soil across acid, neutral or alkaline pH. Shelter plants from strong wind, shade the bulb base with low companions and allow the upper stems to receive good light. Water consistently during active growth without waterlogging, and use only a modest low-nitrogen feed. Deadhead faded flowers, but retain stems and foliage until they yellow and die naturally. Propagate by separating offsets after dormancy.
Use near border fronts, in containers, courtyards, cottage gardens, groups or as a cut flower. All plant parts, pollen and vase water are highly toxic to cats and can cause fatal kidney injury. Ornamental bulbs are not edible; wear gloves during handling and obtain urgent veterinary help after possible cat exposure.
