Kniphofia Alcazar sends tall, dense flower spikes above clumps of long green leaves. Fiery reddish-orange buds open into tubular flowers tipped with yellow from summer into early fall, giving a sunny border a strong vertical accent.
Plant it in full sun in fertile, moist but well-drained loam or sandy soil. It reaches about 3 to 5 feet tall and spreads about 2 to 3 feet. The flowers attract bees and butterflies, and the stems can be cut for arrangements.
Remove old flower stems after blooming and tidy dead leaves in mid-spring. Divide established clumps in late spring when they become crowded, and keep the crown from sitting wet through winter.
