Hosta Tardiana Group El Nino is a medium-sized, clump-forming herbaceous perennial valued for broad, substantial leaves with chalky blue-green centres and irregular pure-white margins, often softly streaked with grey-green. Mature clumps form a dense, upright to mounded dome that shades the crown and gives useful structure from spring until autumn.
Lavender to pale purple bell-shaped flowers, marked with slightly darker stripes, rise on scapes above the foliage in midsummer. The blooms attract pollinating insects, while the architectural leaves remain the principal feature. Plant in rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil in partial or full shade, sheltered from drying wind and strong afternoon sun.
Consistent moisture produces the fullest leaf size and cleanest display, although established plants can tolerate brief dry periods in shade. Use as a mature focal clump, in an irregular group, beside ferns and woodland perennials, along a shaded path, or in a generous container. Protect emerging growth from slugs and snails, avoid waterlogged soil, and divide congested clumps when necessary.
