Hosta So Sweet is a vigorous deciduous herbaceous perennial selected for glossy variegated foliage, reliable growth and strongly fragrant late-summer flowers. Mature plants form a broad mound about 45 to 55 cm high and 90 to 125 cm wide, giving this medium-sized cultivar substantial presence in a shaded border.
The lance-shaped to broadly ovate leaves have deep green centres and wide creamy-yellow margins in spring. The margins gradually lighten to creamy white and then white by midsummer. In late summer, upright scapes carry many fragrant funnel-shaped flowers in pale lavender to near white, with brown capsules sometimes following.
Grow it in partial or full shade in fertile humus-rich clay or loam that remains evenly moist but drains freely. Shelter the foliage from drying winds, mulch annually and water during prolonged dry periods. It is effective as ground cover, in fragrant shade gardens, under shrubs and in large containers. Divide established clumps when crowded and protect emerging foliage from slugs and snails.
