Hosta Lakeside Dragonfly is a vigorous, fast-growing, clump-forming herbaceous Perennial in the Asparagaceae family. Registered by Mary Chastain in 1997, it forms a cascading mound about 35-40 cm high and 70-100 cm wide. It is Deciduous and suited to USDA zones 3-9.
Basal, lightly folded Lanceolate leaves reach about 18 cm long and 9 cm wide. Their medium Blue-Green centers are bordered by broad Creamy Yellow margins in spring that mature toward White during the growing season, creating strong Bordered variegation. Tall leafless scapes rise 60-90 cm above the mound and carry loose Racemes of unscented, pale lavender-Purple Tubular flowers in July and August.
Grow in fertile, humus-rich Chalk, Clay, Loam, or Sand that remains Moist but Well Drained. Use Partial shade on a sheltered East-, North-, or West-facing site away from direct afternoon sun and cold drying winds. Space plants about 75 cm apart, mulch each spring, and water during dry spells so the soil does not dry out. Divide in early spring or late summer. Slugs and snails may damage leaves, and all parts contain saponins that are toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
