Hosta First Frost keeps shaded containers and flat garden edges crisp with blue-green leaves bordered in yellow. The margins gradually age to cream, creating a gentle seasonal shift within each tidy clump. Purple bell flowers rise above the foliage in summer. Its medium spread fills useful space without the bulk of the largest hostas.

Grow it in partial, full, or light shade and maintain consistently moist, well-drained soil. Apply compost around the crown in spring and feed lightly so the leaves stay firm. Remove faded flower stems after bloom and clear collapsed foliage in late fall or early spring. Divide in spring as new shoots appear to preserve the cultivar pattern. Check for slugs and snails, and keep the plant away from dogs, cats, and horses because it is toxic if eaten.
