Hosta First Blush is a patented hybrid plantain lily with a compact, mounding habit. Spring leaves open green with thin red margins, then develop a distinctive purplish-red blush between the veins. Red petioles extend color into the leaf bases before the blades become greener as the season advances.
Grow it in fertile, moist, well-drained soil in partial or full shade. Keep the root zone from drying out and shelter the foliage from cold, dry winds.
In midsummer, red-purple scapes carry funnel-shaped purple-pink flowers above the foliage. The broad mound suits shaded borders, containers, and ground-cover planting.
