Hosta Colored Hulk is a deciduous rhizomatous perennial in the Asparagaceae family. It forms a mature foliage mound about 35 to 40 cm high and 60 to 70 cm wide. Thick, broadly ovate leaves are slightly cupped and carry Green to Yellow centers surrounded by consistently wide dark Green margins.
Leafless scapes rise to about 45 cm and carry loose Racemes of Purple tubular flowers in July and August. Brown Capsules may follow in September and October. The cultivar was registered in 2011 as a sport of Hosta Anne and is valued primarily for its stable reverse variegation.
Grow in partial shade in fertile, humus-rich clay or loam that retains moisture while draining adequately. Protect the clump from drying conditions and harsh exposed sun, apply organic matter without burying the crown, and maintain airflow around the leaves.
Divide established clumps in spring or autumn. Remove faded Racemes unless Capsules are wanted, then clear collapsed foliage after seasonal dieback. Slugs, snails, vine weevil larvae, foliar nematodes, deer, and rabbits may damage leaves. Hosta virus X, leaf spots, crown rot, petiole rot, and root rot may occur. Hosta contains saponins and is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses if eaten.
