Hosta 'Bloodline' is a medium-sized plantain lily grown for its striking foliage and neat, clump-forming habit. The dark green leaves are edged in creamy white, and the deep red stems show clearly at the base of the leaves. In mid to late summer, pale lavender flowers rise above the foliage and add a soft seasonal display. This mix of leaf and stem color gives the plant strong value even when it is not in bloom. It is a good choice for adding texture and color to shaded planting areas.

This hosta grows best in partial to full shade in moist but well-drained soil. It works well in borders, woodland-style planting, shade gardens, and containers. It can also be used as ground cover when planted in groups. Slugs and snails are the most common pests, and deer or rabbits may also feed on the leaves. In damp or poorly drained spots, leaf spot, crown rot, and foliar nematodes can also become a problem.

Pruning is simple and mainly means removing old flower stalks and damaged leaves through the season. After frost, the faded foliage can be cut back close to the ground to keep the plant tidy and reduce pest problems. Propagation is usually done by division, which is the easiest way to keep the plant true to type. Each division should have healthy roots and at least one strong growing point. With steady moisture and a sheltered, shady place, Hosta 'Bloodline' is a reliable perennial with strong leaf interest from spring to fall.
