Hemerocallis Summer Wine is a deciduous, clump-forming herbaceous perennial that develops broad mounds of dense basal fans. Its arching Linear Green leaves have Entire margins and Parallel veins, creating useful foliage structure from spring until autumn. Leafless branching scapes rise above the foliage in midsummer and carry cymose groups of large Single flowers. Each flower is about fourteen centimeters across, with six light wine Red to Purple tepals surrounding a Green and Yellow throat. Individual diurnal flowers last for only a day, but numerous buds open in succession.
Grow Summer Wine in full sun or partial shade in fertile soil that remains moist but drains freely. Full sun supports the strongest flowering, while light partial shade can help preserve the rich flower color. The cultivar accepts Chalk, Clay, Loam, or Sand across Acid, Neutral, or Alkaline conditions. Water freely during active growth, avoid prolonged dryness and standing water, and divide congested clumps in early spring or autumn to maintain vigour.
Use this low-maintenance daylily in flowering borders, cottage gardens, urban gardens, coastal planting, or large patio containers. Remove finished scapes and dead foliage as required. Hemerocallis gall midges, aphids, red spider mites, thrips, slugs, snails, rust, bacterial leaf and stem rot, and crown rot may occasionally occur. All parts are toxic to cats if eaten, so keep feline pets away from the plant and seek urgent veterinary advice after suspected ingestion.
