Hemerocallis Gentle Shepherd is a clump-forming semi-evergreen daylily with arching, narrow green leaves and sturdy leafless flowering scapes. In early to midsummer, each scape carries a succession of large circular flowers. The blooms are almost pure ivory white with a fresh yellow-green throat, six broad segments, six stamens, and a slender central style. Individual flowers last about one day, but new buds open in sequence.

Grow it in full sun or light partial shade in fertile soil that remains moist but drains freely. Deep loam is ideal, although clay, chalk, or sandy soil can be improved with organic matter. Water freely from spring through summer and during dry spells, because flowering may decline if plants dry out. Divide established clumps every few years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour.

Use Gentle Shepherd in flower borders, cottage gardens, courtyards, large containers, edging, or broad mass plantings. Its calm ivory flowers combine with Nepeta, Salvia, Geranium, Deschampsia, or Carex without losing focus. Remove spent flowers and finished scapes for a tidy display. The plant is toxic to cats and should be sited responsibly.
