Geranium sanguineum forms low spreading mounds topped with pink-purple saucer flowers in spring and summer. Lobed green foliage gives the plant a textured base and turns red in fall. The compact growth works well along flat garden edges, in rock gardens, or as natural ground cover. Pollinators can visit the open blooms while the foliage continues to fill space.
Plant it in full sun or partial shade and keep the soil moist but well drained. Compost mixed into the ground and a light spring mulch provide enough feeding. Remove flowered stems and tired foliage after summer bloom to encourage a fresh low mound. Divide plants from early fall to early spring and keep new divisions moist while roots settle. Watch for slugs, snails, and sawfly larvae, and prevent mildew with good airflow.
