Epimedium Amber Queen is a vigorous semi-evergreen perennial that spreads gradually by rhizomes into a dense, layered ground-cover mat. Its wiry basal stems carry whorled, compound leaves divided into lanceolate, serrated leaflets.
Juvenile foliage opens russet-red and strongly mottled before maturing to uniform green. From April through June, suspended compound panicles carry many downward-facing amber-orange flowers with four bright yellow spurs.
Grow this shade perennial in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained chalk, loam, or sand. Shelter it from drying winds, water regularly while establishing, mulch with organic matter, and remove old foliage before the new flower stems rise.
