Dicentra Aurora is a spreading, rhizomatous deciduous perennial about 18 inches tall and 4 to 20 inches wide. Blue-green, finely divided fernlike foliage forms a bushy clump. Arching stems carry clusters of creamy white, heart-shaped, spurred flowers from May through August.
Grow it in partial shade in moist, fertile, humus-rich clay, loam, or sand. Full sun is suitable when the soil does not dry out. Choose a sheltered east-, north-, or west-facing site with neutral or alkaline soil. The spreading clumps suit borders, edging, containers, woodland gardens, ground cover, and underplanting, and the flowers can be cut.
Space plants about 20 inches apart. Divide established plants in early spring or after the leaves have died down. Routine pruning is not required, though removing faded flowers encourages more buds. Monitor for slugs and snails; the plant is generally disease-free. Wear gloves because all parts may cause stomach pain if eaten and the foliage may aggravate skin allergies.
