Dahlia Pacific Jewel is a bushy, clump-forming tuberous perennial with an upright outline, green divided foliage, and distinctive purple stems. Its small flower heads open in soft pink to pale purple tones, paling toward the center around a greenish-yellow base, and continue from midsummer into autumn.
The restrained flower size and long flowering period give this cultivar a useful scale for the front or middle of a sunny border. It also performs well in patio containers and cutting gardens, where regular deadheading keeps new buds developing and the sturdy colored stems carry blooms cleanly above the foliage.
Grow in fertile, humus-rich soil that drains freely while remaining moist during active growth. Pinch young shoots for a branched plant, stake only where exposure makes support necessary, and water during dry periods. In areas with freezing winters, lift the tubers after the foliage declines and store them dry and frost-free.
