Dahlia Ferncliff Illusion is a tall, vigorous tuberous perennial with upright branching stems and divided green foliage. Mature plants form substantial clumps and carry their large flowers well above the leafy framework, making the cultivar valuable for the back or middle of a sunny border.
From midsummer until autumn frost, fully double informal decorative flowerheads open creamy white with a soft lavender to reddish-purple wash toward the petal tips. The broad, slightly irregular florets create a light, airy outline despite the impressive flower size. Strong stems make the blooms especially useful for cutting.
Grow in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains evenly moist but drains freely, in full sun and with shelter from strong winds. Plant after frost danger has passed, water deeply during dry periods, feed during active growth, and deadhead regularly. Lift and store tubers where winter freezing would damage them, then replant after frost in spring.
