Dahlia Thomas Edison is a historic 1929 decorative cultivar forming an upright bushy plant about 100–110 cm high and 45–60 cm wide. Strong branching stems carry lush mid- to deep-green pinnate leaves and very large, fully double informal decorative blooms around 15–20 cm across. Broad slightly irregular petals are velvety deep purple to magenta-purple, often a little paler toward the outer edges. Flowering begins in midsummer and continues until heavy frost. Grow in full sun in fertile, moist but freely drained soil, stake early, feed during active growth and deadhead. Lift and store tubers cool and frost-free in barely moist compost, sand or vermiculite where winters are cold.
