Fragrant white bells make Convallaria majalis a classic ground cover for cool, shaded gardens. Broad green leaves rise in low, spreading colonies, while slender one-sided racemes carry nodding flowers in spring and early summer. Established plants usually stand about 6 to 12 inches tall and can spread 8 to 20 inches as their rhizomes extend through the soil.
Plant in partial or full shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains well. A sheltered woodland bed, the ground beneath shrubs, or a shaded informal border provides suitable conditions. Top-dress with leaf mould in autumn and keep new plantings evenly moist while they establish.
Divide established rhizomes in autumn when more plants are needed or when a colony requires control. No pruning is required. All parts are toxic if eaten and can poison people and animals, so place the plant carefully around children and pets.
