Astilbe ‘Sprite’ is a compact astilbe that forms a neat mound of glossy, fern-like leaves. In early to mid-summer, slender plumes rise above the foliage with small shell-pink flowers that create a soft, floating effect. This plant adds fine texture and gentle color to shaded beds, woodland gardens, and the front of borders. The foliage is not variegated and stays attractive when the soil is kept evenly moist.
Best growth comes in part shade to shade, in rich soil that holds moisture well. Dry ground and hot sun can lead to browning along the leaf edges and a tired look during summer. When conditions are right, Astilbe ‘Sprite’ works well in groups, as edging in shady areas, and near water features where the ground stays damp. Flower stems can be removed after bloom for a cleaner look, or left for added texture.
Care is generally simple, with few serious problems when the plant is not stressed. Occasional issues can include powdery mildew, wilt, spider mites, whiteflies, or vine weevil. Dividing clumps every few years helps keep the plant strong and also provides new plants for other areas. In late winter or early spring, old stems and foliage can be trimmed away so fresh growth can show clearly.
