Astilbe 'Cappuccino' is a shade-loving perennial with finely divided leaves and upright, creamy white flower plumes. In spring, the foliage opens in deep bronze and copper tones, then shifts to darker green as the plant matures. The flower stems can show rich red to purple tones, which adds extra contrast. The overall look is soft and airy, with a tidy, clumping growth habit.
Even moisture is the key to keeping this plant looking its best. In part shade to full shade, growth stays fuller and the foliage holds its color better through the season. Rich, well-drained soil that does not dry out helps avoid stress and keeps the leaves fresh through summer. The flowers also work well for cutting when the plumes are at their peak.
Care is straightforward and mostly about keeping the planting looking neat. Old flower stems can be cut off after bloom, and dead foliage can be trimmed back in late fall or early spring. When the clump becomes crowded, dividing it is the easiest way to create new plants and refresh the original. Like other astilbes, it may sometimes face leaf spot or powdery mildew, and aphids can appear, especially when conditions are not ideal.
