Astilbe x arendsii Fanal is a compact deciduous herbaceous perennial valued for unusually dark red flowers and richly coloured foliage. Mature plants form dense clumps about 45 to 60 cm high in bloom and 30 to 45 cm wide, with graceful fern-like leaves concentrated below the flower stems.
The divided leaves emerge bronze-red and mature to dark green with a persistent reddish tint. In early to midsummer, dark stems carry narrow dense panicles of tiny deep crimson-red flowers, creating strong vertical accents above the mound. The plumes are long-lasting and may remain as decorative brown seed heads after flowering.
Grow Fanal in partial or full shade in fertile humus-rich clay or loam that remains consistently moist and can even be poorly drained. Do not allow the root zone to dry. Mulch with compost to conserve moisture, divide overcrowded clumps and choose whether to remove faded plumes or retain them for winter structure.
