Asclepias incarnata Ice Ballet is a compact, white-flowered selection of North American swamp milkweed. It forms an upright clump of sturdy branching stems with narrow, taper-pointed dark green leaves and reaches about 90–120 cm high.
Fragrant white flowers with intricate reflexed petals and raised hoods gather in dense rounded umbels from midsummer onward. The blooms provide nectar for butterflies and hummingbirds, while the foliage is a larval food source for monarch butterflies. Slender green follicles later split to release silky-haired seeds.
Grow it in full sun in medium-wet to moist, fertile soil near a pond, in a rain garden, or in a consistently moist border. Its deep taproot dislikes disturbance. Wear gloves around milky sap, keep all parts away from children and animals, and avoid insecticides that could harm monarch larvae or other beneficial insects.
