Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata Blue Barlow is a relatively short-lived but highly distinctive herbaceous columbine. Divided dark green foliage forms a compact basal clump, while branched leafy stems carry fully double, pompon-like flowers in deep violet-blue from late spring into early summer.
The flower form differs from typical spurred columbines. Multiple narrow petal-like segments create a rounded, nodding to outward-facing head without conspicuous long spurs. Buds, half-open flowers, fresh double blooms and a few aging heads often appear together, giving an established group a naturally varied display.
Grow in fertile, moist but freely drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Reliable moisture supports fresh foliage, but avoid stagnant wet conditions and improve airflow where mildew is common. Deadhead for a longer flowering period, or leave selected seedheads if natural self-sowing is wanted. Seedlings may vary because aquilegias cross freely.
Use Blue Barlow in cottage borders, cutting gardens and light woodland edges, preferably in irregular groups. Suitable companions include Helleborus, Geranium, Dryopteris, Carex and Epimedium.
