Scalloped leaves that hold rounded beads of rain give Alchemilla mollis interest even before its flowers open. Airy chartreuse sprays rise above the soft green foliage in summer, creating a light layer around taller plants. The dense mound reaches about 10 to 20 inches tall and wide, making it easy to repeat along a flat path or across the front of a border.

Plant it in sun or shade where the soil stays lightly moist but drains well. It grows in chalk, clay, loam, or sandy soil and needs little attention once established. From late summer onward, shear tired flowers and leaves to refresh the mound and reduce unwanted seedlings.

The lime-green sprays soften the base of Rosa without competing with its larger flowers. Geranium can weave beside the rounded leaves and continue the border display after the lady’s mantle is cut back. Both genera suit the same moisture-retentive, well-drained garden soil.
