Agapanthus 'Black Buddha' is a bold clump-forming perennial grown for its dark flower stems and rich blue flower heads. The deep-colored stems set off the blooms well and give the plant a strong, modern look. Its strap-shaped green leaves form a neat base and die back in the colder part of the year. The plant brings strong color and structure to sunny planting areas.

This variety flowers from mid to late summer and works well in borders, gravel gardens, and large containers. It is a strong choice for cut flowers and also helps support bees and butterflies. The blooms can set seed without needing another variety, but seedlings will not stay true to type. It is valued as much for its dark stems as for its flower color.

Spent flower stems can be cut away after bloom, and old leaves can be cleared off before fresh spring growth begins. Established clumps can be divided to make new plants in a simple and reliable way. It is usually healthy, but slugs, snails, and wet soil can sometimes cause problems. Flower buds should also be checked for gall midge where that pest is known. With good drainage and a sunny place, it is an easy plant with a strong garden presence.
