Agapanthus Black Buddhist forms a compact clump of rich green, strap-shaped leaves. From midsummer into late summer, sturdy dark purple to near-black stems rise above the foliage and carry rounded umbels of trumpet-shaped flowers. Each dark blue to purple-blue bloom has a deeper stripe along the middle of every petal. Mature plants reach about 60 to 90 cm tall and 30 to 60 cm wide, giving borders and large containers a strong upright accent. The flower stems also suit cutting.
Grow it in full sun in fertile, moist but well-drained soil. Partial shade can help in hot climates. Water regularly during active growth, especially in summer, and keep the soil from becoming too dry. Feed monthly from spring until flowering, deadhead faded flower stems, and remove leaves as they die back. Divide established clumps in spring. The plant is harmful if eaten, so wear gloves when handling.
