Agapanthus africanus is an accepted South African species from the winter-rainfall Western Cape. It makes an evergreen mound of leathery strap-shaped leaves with upright flower stalks.
Thick-textured light to mainly deep blue flowers form rounded summer umbels above the foliage. Bees and other pollinators visit the flowers, while the plant remains architectural before and after bloom.
Grow the true species in a shallow container of very well-drained slightly acidic sandy compost, allow it to become pot-bound, and protect it from prolonged freezing. Feed with a slow-release fertilizer, water carefully for its winter-rainfall rhythm, and handle sap or swallowed material cautiously around children, dogs, and cats.
