Actaea simplex Chocoholic is a clump-forming woodland perennial with finely dissected, dark reddish-purple to bronze foliage. Slender branched racemes carry strongly sweet-scented pale pink and creamy-white flowers in late summer and early autumn, followed by black berries.
Grow it in partial to full shade in cool, humus-rich clay or loam that stays evenly moist but drains well. Shelter the tall flowering stems from strong wind, mulch with organic matter, and do not allow the root zone to dry out. Cut the stems back after flowering or fruiting.
