Dahlia Santa Claus US is a tender, tuberous perennial with a bushy, upright habit. Plants grow about 40 to 45 inches tall and produce informal decorative flowerheads. The long, ruffled white petals carry strong red markings at their bases and margins, creating a distinctive pinwheel effect. Individual plants may occasionally produce solid red, white, or orange flowers.
Grow it in full sun in fertile, moist but well-drained soil after frost. Water well during dry, hot weather, mulch with organic matter, feed with a potassium-rich fertilizer, and provide support before stems become heavy with flowers. Pinch young plants to encourage branching and deadhead regularly for a long summer-to-autumn display. In cold regions, lift and store the tubers after frost. Dahlias are toxic to pets and horses, so keep them away from the plant.
