Rudbeckia Occidentalis Black Beauty is a compact upright perennial that grows about 2 to 3 feet high and 1 to 2 feet wide. Stiff green stems rise from a rhizomatous clump of dark green leaves.
Its petalless flower heads are elongated velvety-black cones, each framed by bright green bracts and often circled by a narrow golden-yellow pollen ring. The sculptural heads appear from early summer into early fall and are useful fresh or dried.
Grow it in full sun and consistently moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Use it in prairie plantings, informal borders, pollinator gardens, or cutting beds, and provide good air circulation to reduce powdery mildew.
