Phlox paniculata Prince of Orange, also known as Orange Perfection, is an upright bushy perennial reaching about 60 to 90 centimetres high and 45 to 60 centimetres wide. Sturdy leafy stems carry opposite, narrow lanceolate dark green leaves with dentate margins. From July into September, dense terminal panicles open in warm salmon-orange shades, with each tubular flower marked by a distinct red eye. The fragrant flowers attract pollinators and make useful cuts, while the cultivar is noted for excellent resistance to powdery mildew.
Grow it in full sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist but drains freely. Space plants about 55 centimetres apart and maintain good air circulation. Water at soil level rather than over the foliage, add compost in spring, and mulch in summer to retain moisture around the roots.
